OUR STORY

“We rejoice and give all the glory to God for His work in and through us.”

First Evangelical Church has a rich history, born out of a desire for the faithful teaching of God’s Word, corporate worship, and to follow the Great Commission by spreading the Gospel and making disciples of all the nations.

First Evan, as it has come to be known, was established in 1935 by a small group of about 100 believers with Presbyterian roots. There was a strong desire to provide opportunity for the whole community and every generation to be taught and discipled through sound Biblical teaching and Bible conferences, featuring teachers and speakers from around the country and the world.

Through the ministries of eight senior pastors, God has faithfully enabled us to do this in our Jerusalem, Judea, and to the uttermost parts of the world.

In 1939, after meeting in various rented spaces, we purchased and built a church home at 2693 Union Avenue Extended, where we worshiped for almost 40 years. In the early 1970’s, Memphis saw a great revival, in which members of First Evan played an active role. We soon outgrew two services in this facility. We then bought the property at 735 Ridge Lake Boulevard and built our current facility where we have worshiped for the last 50 years.

We rejoice and give all the glory to God for His work in and through us. Our corporate worship and church-wide ministries are faithfully continuing during our current time of transition.
